(Adnkronos) – The Cuban government denounces an attempt of “infiltration with terrorist aims” by the crew of the speedboat, registered in the United States, which was stopped by the Coast Guard after entering Cuban territorial waters in a shootout in which four people were killed.

“It has been established that the neutralized speedboat, with Florida registration ‘Fl7726SH, which was carrying ten armed people who, according to preliminary statements from those detained, intended to carry out an infiltration with terrorist aims,” reads a statement published on social media, specifying that “assault rifles, short-barreled weapons, Molotov cocktails, bulletproof vests, telescopic sights, and camouflage uniforms” were seized on board the speedboat.”

In a note from the Ministry of Interior, the participants in what is defined as “an armed aggression against the border troop unit” are also identified as “Cubans residing in the United States, most of whom have a history of criminal and violent activities.”

In particular, reference is made to two individuals, Amijail Sánchez González and Leordan Enrique Cruz Gómez, who “have been subjected to criminal investigations and are wanted by Cuban authorities, based on their involvement in the promotion, planning, organization, financing, support, or commission of actions carried out in the national territory, or in other countries, in relation to acts of terrorism.” The ministry also announced that Duniel Hernández Santos has been arrested, accused of having been “sent from the United States to ensure the reception of the armed infiltration, who has now confessed his actions.”

Regarding the reconstruction of yesterday’s events, according to Cuban authorities, the Florida-registered speedboat approached territorial waters off the province of Villa Clara and was intercepted by a ‘Guardafronteras’ patrol who asked the people on board to identify themselves. At this point, one of the people on board opened fire, wounding the commander of the Cuban unit who then returned fire, killing four people on board the speedboat and wounding the other six who were arrested.
