The United Nations General Assembly has approved, with 107 votes in favor, 12 against, and 51 abstentions, a resolution calling for a “complete, unconditional and immediate ceasefire” and a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” in Ukraine. The United States had requested the deletion of two paragraphs containing what had already been approved in the past, namely that “peace can only be just and lasting if it is based on the norms of the UN Charter and if it respects the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine,” announced the President of the Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, in an interview with Ard. The United States therefore decided to abstain from the vote after its request to remove the two paragraphs was rejected by a large majority. While reiterating that it “welcomes the call for an immediate ceasefire.” However, it was specified, “the resolution also includes language that is likely to distract from ongoing negotiations rather than support the discussion of the full spectrum of diplomatic avenues that can pave the way for lasting peace.”
