Nikkei Rises Over 700 Points to Hit New Intraday High

Tokyo, Feb. 25 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average briefly climbed more than 700 points to hit a new all-time intraday high Wednesday morning, following overnight rises in key U.S. stock indexes. At 9:25 a.m., the Nikkei index of 225 selected issues listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange’s Prime section stood up 726.80 points, or 1.27 pct, from Tuesday at 58,047.89. The Nikkei marked its previous intraday high of 58,015.08 on Feb. 12. Japanese equities attracted purchases as “software stocks were hunted on the U.S. market and the Philadelphia semiconductor index hit a record high,” an official of a bank-affiliated securities firm said.
