Beijing rejects US accusations on nuclear test, ‘completely unfounded’

(Adnkronos) – The accusations made by the United States, according to which China would have conducted “a nuclear explosion test,” are “completely unfounded.” This was stated at a press conference by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, who affirmed that “the accusations by the United States are based on speculation and vague insinuations.” Christopher Yeaw, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Office of Arms Control and Nonproliferation, accused Beijing, stating that the United States will resume testing on par with China.

Mao stated that China has repeatedly reiterated that it has “always firmly upheld the purposes and objectives of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty” and has “consistently honored the commitment of the five nuclear-weapon states to a moratorium on nuclear tests.” According to Mao, “to evade its international obligations regarding arms control, the United States has gone so far as to incriminate and defame other countries, which severely undermines its own international credibility.” For this reason, she added, “China urges the United States to uphold its commitment to a moratorium on nuclear tests, support the international consensus on banning nuclear tests, and stop seeking excuses to restart nuclear tests.”
