(Adnkronos) – Italy must “keep working constructively with the United States”, foreign minister Antonio Tajani wrote Monday after the US Supreme Court stuck down president Donald Trump’s global tariffs and he responded with 15% tariffs on all foreign imports.
“Minister @Antonio_Tajani took part in a meeting of the @G7 Trade Ministers in #Brussels following the US Supreme Court’s decision on #tariffs,” Tajani wrote Monday on X.
“We have received reassurances from the US that it does not wish to cause instability for our businesses,” the post went on.
“It is important to continue working constructively with Washington to ensure a swift transition toward the new system. We share a common goal on both sides of the Atlantic: greater predictability for our companies, a stronger economic partnership, and renewed commitment to growth,” Tajani wrote.
In the 6-3 ruling on Friday, US Supreme Court found that a 1977 law designed to address US national emergencies did not provide the legal justification for most of the Trump administration’s tariffs.
Trump’s 15% global tariff on all foreign imports is devised under Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act, a different legal framework from the one looked at by the Supreme Court.
The European Union as a whole will be 0.8 percentage points worse off under Trump’s new, across-the-board tariffs, with Italy facing an extra 1.7 percentage points of US tariffs, according to the Global Trade Alert trade policy monitor.
On Sunday, the European Commission demanded that the US honour the terms of a 2025 EU-US trade agreement which set a 15% US tariff rate for most EU goods, apart from ones covered by other sectoral tariffs such as steel. The deal also allowed zero tariffs on some products such as aircraft and spare parts.
It was not immediately clear whether the Trump administration’s new 15% tariffs are designed to replace the EU-US deal. The European Commission, which negotiates trade policy on behalf of the 27 EU member states, said on Sunday Washington must provide “full clarity” on the steps it intends to take following the court ruling.
