(Adnkronos) – Ambassador Niccolo Fontana on Monday laid a wreath in Sulaymaniya in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region of Iraq to commemorate Jalal Talabani, the country’s first president after the fall of late dictator Saddam Hussein and “a great friend of Italy”, the embassy wrote on X.
” @ItalyinIraq. #Sulaymaniya, we visited the Mausoleum of Mam (Uncle) Jalal, laying a wreath in memory of #JalalTalabani,” read the post.
“Iraq’s first President after 2005 and regarded by many Kurds as a founding father, he was a great friend of Italy and contributed to strengthening bilateral relations Italy and the Kurdistan region (KRI).”
