Sudan: Italy condemns ‘abhorrent violence’ against civilians, calls for justice

(Adnkronos) – Italy has deplored the “abhorrent violence”, “grave” breaches of international humanitarian law and an “unacceptable escalation of terror” against civilians in Sudan’s almost three-year civil war by paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

“Italy adheres to the declaration on the crisis in #Sudan, promoted by Germany and endorsed by the majority of European partners,” the foreign ministry wrote Wednesday on X.

“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the abhorrent violence against civilians, especially against women and children, and all grave violations of international humanitarian law, which must be subject to prompt and impartial investigations to identify those responsible and put an end to an unacceptable escalation of terror,” the foreign ministry wrote.

“We stand with the Sudanese people and with the local and international humanitarian organisations that tirelessly operate in highly adverse conditions to provide assistance. We will continue to work in every forum for a political solution that ends the suffering and restores peace, stability and dignity to Sudan,” the foreign ministry concluded.

Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani was among 30 signatories to a joint statement on Wednesday condemning the “deadly and unlawful attacks” against civilians, civilian infrastructure and humanitarian operations in Sudan. The perpetrators of what are possible war crimes or crimes against humanity must be promptly investigated and tried, the statement said.

The statement urged all sides in Sudan’s brutal conflict to respect international humanitarian law, including allowing civilians swift, secure and unhampered access to essential aid and called for an immediate end to hostilities.
