(Adnkronos) – Tarique Rahman, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) which triumphed in the country’s last elections, has been sworn in as the new prime minister. The February 12 elections were the first consultations since the end of the Sheikh Hasina era, since the 2024 uprising, and since student protests in the name of change. Tarique Rahman takes the helm of the government after the interim administration of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, who steered the country towards the vote.
During a ceremony in Dhaka, 25 ministers were sworn in, The Star reported. This followed the swearing-in of the deputies, before the head of the Electoral Commission.
Sixty years old, son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia who died last December, Tarique Rahman is the heir to a political dynasty. He has a career marked by accusations and years lived in exile. He returned to Bangladesh at the end of last year, after 17 years in the United Kingdom, five days before his mother’s death. Since January 9, he has officially been the leader of the BNP, founded in 1978 by his father Ziaur Rahman, an officer who became president of Bangladesh, assassinated in 1981. In the elections, the BNP coalition won 212 of the 300 seats in Parliament.
