Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus announces resignation, ‘paved the way for reforms’

(Adnkronos) – Muhammad Yunus, until today leading the interim administration of Bangladesh, has announced his resignation, four days after the first elections since the end of the Sheikh Hasina era. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by Tarique Rahman, son of Khaleda Zia, triumphed in the vote. 

“Tonight I am before you to bid farewell and resign from my post – said Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, in a live TV speech – We have swept away the ruins, rebuilt institutions, and paved the way for reforms.” 

“Today the interim government resigns – he stated – But let not the practice of democracy, freedom of expression, and fundamental rights that has been initiated be interrupted.”
