Tokyo, Feb. 13 (Jiji Press)–Japan’s opposition Centrist Reform Alliance on Friday elected Junya Ogawa, former secretary-general of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, as its leader. In the leadership election, Ogawa, 54, gained 27 votes from the new centrist party’s 49 lawmakers, surpassing 22 votes for his sole contender, Takeshi Shina, a 59-year-old former parliamentary vice minister for internal affairs and communications. The Centrist Reform Alliance was formed by the CDP and Komeito ahead of last Sunday’s House of Representatives election, in which the new party suffered a crushing defeat. Of the new party’s lawmakers, 28 are former Komeito members, but none of them ran in the leadership election. Ogawa’s term as party leader will last until March 2027.
