USA, Turkish student wins legal battle, will not be expelled

(Adnkronos) – Rumeysa Ozturk, the Turkish student at Tufts University, will not be expelled from the United States. She won her legal battle after being detained by immigration officers near her home in Massachusetts. Her lawyers announced this, explaining that the immigration court has indeed blocked her expulsion, ruling that the Department of Homeland Security has not demonstrated why Ozturk should be removed from the United States. Her lawyers explained that the Department can appeal the immigration court’s decision.

Ozturk is a doctoral student who studies children’s relationship with social media. She was arrested last March while walking down the street, as the Trump Administration began targeting foreign students and activists involved in pro-Palestinian campaigns. She co-authored an editorial criticizing her university’s response to Israel and the war in Gaza. “Today I breathe a sigh of relief knowing that, despite the flaws in the justice system, my case could give hope to those who have been harmed by the United States government,” the student said in a statement released by her lawyers.
