Japan, heavy snowfall, death toll rises to 46

(Adnkronos) – The new death toll from the heavy snowfall that has hit Japan since January 20 is at least 46. The update was provided by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, as reported by local media. According to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, most of the victims were elderly people who died while trying to remove snow. In Niigata prefecture alone, 17 deaths have been reported.
