Republican Senator, ‘ICE has halted large-scale operations in Maine’

29 Gennaio 2026

(Adnkronos) – “There are currently no large-scale operations underway or planned by ICE in Maine.” Republican Senator Susan Collins announced this, explaining that “I have asked Secretary Noem and others in the administration to urge ICE to reconsider their approach to immigration enforcement in the State.”

The announcement by the moderate Republican senator, elected in a state where the independent vote is strong, comes after more than 200 people were arrested in ICE raids in recent days, sparking protests from citizens and political figures, including Governor Janet Mills.

“Today I say to the people of Maine: we will not be intimidated, we will not be silenced, and to anyone, including federal agents, I say: if you want to endanger the people of Maine, you must first deal with me,” said the Democrat, speaking to the State Assembly, who is a formidable opponent to Collins in the November elections. The senator, a candidate for a sixth term, therefore immediately rushed to ask the administration to block the ICE ‘surge’ in Maine, to avoid negative impacts on her election campaign.
