Nyt, Iran asked Cairo, Riyadh and Doha for help to stop Trump’s attack

29 Gennaio 2026

(Adnkronos) – In recent days, Iranian officials have asked for help from diplomats in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt in an attempt to reopen talks with the United States and avoid the military action threatened by US President Donald Trump. The New York Times writes this, recalling that Arab states played a decisive role in convincing Trump to suspend military action three weeks ago. But after the raid in Venezuela and the arrest of Nicolas Maduro, Trump now has more forces in the region and more military options available, the newspaper writes. Tomorrow, among other things, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will be in Turkey for talks with Ankara’s diplomacy chief Hakan Fidan. Turkey, in fact, has expressed its willingness to play a mediating role to avert war. Fidan, among other things, has asked Washington to separate the nuclear issue from other demands, which in his opinion Iran could not accept.

Anyway, after the June attacks, Iran is considered capable of striking American and allied targets throughout the region, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. And for this reason, Tehran’s threats to retaliate should be taken seriously. “No one can take for granted that Iran will not react, and it will probably react as it has in its own ways, making the situation as ugly and violent as possible,” said Suzanne Maloney, an Iran expert and director of foreign policy at the Brookings Institution. Trump, she added, “does not want to enter into a prolonged conflict with Iran.”
