(Adnkronos) – The European Union is likely to put Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (Pasdaran) on its list of terrorist organisations over the elite force’s recent deadly crackdown on nationwide anti-government protests – in a move spearheaded by Italy – foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday.
“We are moving towards a political agreement to include the Pasdaran on the list of terrorist organisations,” Tajani told reporters in Brussels as he went into a foreign affairs ministers council meeting.
“Today there may be political decision with a concrete decision (listing) in a few weeks,” said Tajani.
“There is great convergence on the part of all European countries on this decision after the repression in recent weeks that led to thousands and thousands of unacceptable deaths among the demonstrators,” Tajani said.
The EU is also identifying Pasdaran members who will be sanctioned, Tajani stated.
“It seems to me that there is already a political agreement in this regard, and I believe that this list will definitely be approved today,” he said.
Ahead of Thursday’s foreign affairs minister council, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc was slapping new sanctions on Iran.
“I also expect we will list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation,” Kallas said.
