Tokyo, Jan. 28 (Jiji Press)–The dollar was weak below 153 yen in Tokyo trading Wednesday, after remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump welcoming the greenback’s softness prompted the currency to plunge in New York overnight. At 5 p.m. in Tokyo, the dollar stood at 152.63-64 yen, down from 154.71-72 yen at the same time Tuesday. Trump told reporters in the U.S. state of Iowa on Tuesday that the current value of the dollar was great following its recent depreciation against major currencies. The greenback’s slide was also fueled by heightened worries about a possible coordinated dollar-selling, yen-buying intervention by Japanese and U.S. authorities. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
