USA, Dems refuse to approve budget with Ice funds, partial shutdown risked

(Adnkronos) – After the killing of Alex Pretti on Saturday in Minneapolis by Ice, Democrats announced that they intend to block the approval of the budget bill for the Department of Security, containing 10 billion for Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant police. “What is happening in Minnesota is shocking and unacceptable in any American city, Democrats have sought common-sense reforms in Homeland Security spending but due to Republicans’ refusal to counter Trump, the law is unable to prevent Ice abuses,” said leader Chuck Schumer, adding that “Democratic senators will not allow the budget bill with funds for Homeland Security to go forward.”

“The population must be protected from abuses by their government, Republican senators should work with Americans to approve the other five funding bills while we rewrite the one for Homeland Security,” the Democrat then proposed to his Republican colleagues to avert the risk of another partial shutdown at the end of this week.

Independent Senator Angus King also said he opposes approving the 64.4 billion for Homeland Security without changes being introduced to how Ice operates. “I hate shutdowns, I’m among those who negotiated to find the solution that ended the last one, but I cannot vote for a bill that includes funds for Ice under these circumstances.” “People in Maine are terrified of Ice, this is what’s happening in Portland, people aren’t sending their children to school, aren’t going to work, businesses are suffering,” he then added, also asking the Republican leadership to remove funds for Ice to approve the budget and “avoid a shutdown.”
