Minnesota, Republican gubernatorial candidate withdraws, ‘revenge against my state’

(Adnkronos) – Chris Madel, a Minneapolis lawyer who ran as a Republican for Minnesota governor, has withdrawn, denouncing what he calls the party’s “revenge” against his state, referring to the “uncontrolled disaster” of ICE operations. “I cannot support the national Republican revenge against the citizens of our state, and I cannot consider myself a member of a party that behaves this way,” he added in a video where he states that he initially supported the operation aimed at removing “the worst of the worst” from Minnesota, as Donald Trump claims, by deporting immigrants with criminal records.

“But Operation Metro Surge has expanded far beyond real threats to the public. American citizens, especially those of color, live in terror; they must carry documents proving their citizenship, and this is wrong,” he continued, also condemning home raids without a judicial warrant as unconstitutional. “Using criminal investigations against political opponents is unconstitutional, regardless of who is in power,” he added, in what appears to be a reference to investigations launched against Democratic authorities in Minneapolis and Minnesota.
