Mattarella receives new UNHCR chief Salih

(Adnkronos) – Italy’s head of state Sergio Mattarella held talks at the Quirinal presidential palace in Rome on Monday with the United Nations’ new refugee chief, Iraq’s former president Barham Salih, the Quirinal said in a statement. 

Iraq-Kurdish politician Salih is the former premier of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region. Salih fled his native Iraq aged 18 and sought refuge in Britain, where he studied. He took over the helm of UNHCR from Italian diplomat Filippo Grandi on 1 January.
