(Adnkronos) – Italian major will begin operations at the Bahr Essalam project by end-March with production capacity of up to 100 million cubic feet of gas per day, while a second project is due to come online by July-September, the Libyan Observer reports, quoting Eni’s exploration and production director Luca Vignati.
Vignati made the announcement during a panel discussion on the sidelines of the Libya Energy and Economic Summit 2026 on Saturday in Tripoli, the Libyan Observer reported on Sunday.
The second project to use associated gas will boost output by 100-120 million cubic feet per day, raising Eni’s total gas production in Libya to 800 million cubic feet per day, Vignati said, cited by the Libyan Observer.
The Bahr Essalam gas compression project will help Eni hit its decarbonisation targets by ending flaring across all Eni-operated assets in Libya, Vignati stated, according to the paper.
“We currently have seven projects under development. Two of them will be delivered this year, while another project is scheduled to start by the end of 2027,” the paper cited Vignati as saying.
During the panel discussion, Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) unveiled “ambitious” plans to develop the country’s energy sector, the paper reported.
NOC announced two billion dollars of investments to upgrade pipelines and other key infrastructure to enhance quality and boost foreign investment, according to the paper.
Foreign companies have been wary of investing in Libya, which has been in turmoil since the 2011 overthrow of late dictator Muammar Gaddafi led to rival administrations in Tripoli and in Benghazi in the east.
Disputes between rival armed groups over oil revenues have frequently led to oilfield shutdowns in Libya, one of Africa’s biggest oil producers and an OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) member.
