Iran: Civilian protester deaths demand ‘clear response’ – Italy

26 Gennaio 2026

(Adnkronos) – The “heinous” killing of thousands of civilians by Iran’s security forces during the crackdown on anti-government protests which began last month “demand a clear response, Italy said on Monday.

“The losses suffered by the civilian population during the protests demand a clear response,” Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani wrote Monday on X (formerly Twitter).

Tajani will propose “with other partners” that Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corp be added to the European Union’s list of terrorist organisations, the post continued.

“At the European foreign ministers meeting in Brussels on Thursday, I will propose, in coordination with other partners, that the Revolutionary Guards be included in the list of terrorist organisations, as well as individual sanctions against those responsible for these heinous acts,” Tajani wrote.

Up to 30,000 people may have been killed in street protests across Iran on 8 and 9 January alone, TIME magazine cited two senior officials in Iran’s heath ministry on Sunday as telling the publication.

The official death toll released last week on Iran’s mass protests was 3,117. The true number of people killed in the government crackdown remains unclear amid an internet shutdown that began on 8 January.
