USA: Minnesota, general strike today against Ice presence, hundreds of shops closed

23 Gennaio 2026

(Adnkronos) – Today, Minnesota is striking against Donald Trump’s anti-immigrant police campaign. It’s called “Day of Truth and Freedom,” the day of truth and truth, the general strike called by unions and other groups, to invite workers to abstain from work and shops, restaurants, and other businesses to remain closed.

“It’s a tense situation, people are suffering,” declared Bishop Dwayne Royster, director of Faith Action, referring to the situation of terror and fear in which migrant communities and residents of Minneapolis and other centers have been living for weeks, where 3,000 agents have arrived, conducting their raids with weapons in hand and faces covered. According to the bishop, Minnesota residents have shown “a deep resilience and desire to unite in a way I haven’t seen in a long time.”

Teachers’ unions are mobilized for today’s strike, having been at the forefront in recent weeks to defend teachers, students, and families at risk of detention. A school district also reported that agents arrested a 5-year-old child, then used him as ‘bait’ to get the house door opened, and then arrested all family members who were transferred with him to a detention center.

Hundreds of shops and other commercial activities are expected to remain closed today in Minneapolis and St. Paul: “There’s a time when you have to take a stand, and that time has come; if I have to lose a day’s earnings, it’s worth it,” declared Alison Kirwin, owner of a Minneapolis restaurant that will remain closed today. The protest comes the day after Vice President JD Vance’s visit to the city, where he claimed that the Trump administration wants to “lower the temperature” after weeks of tensions.

“The directive I received from the president is to meet these people halfway, work with them so we can carry out these operations without endangering Ice agents and we can reduce the chaos a bit, in fact, I think a lot,” said Vance who did not fail to point the finger at “far-left agitators” and against local Democratic authorities considered responsible for the chaos for not having collaborated with federal authorities who, he admitted, “can do better” in terms of communication.

Vance then used different tones from those with which, after the killing of Renee Good, who was shot in the head by an Ice agent while protesting from her car against a raid, he said that the federal agent “was protected by total immunity.” Now he said that federal agents who “violates the law will face disciplinary sanctions, but will not be judged by courts of public opinion.” Words that come after several polls have shown that the majority of Americans do not consider the agent who killed Good justified, disapprove of Ice’s methods, and believe that these are making American cities less safe.
