Syria: Iraqi PM to Macron, ‘European countries should repatriate their ISIS citizen detainees’

23 Gennaio 2026

(Adnkronos) – Iraqi Prime Minister Shia al-Sudani told Emmanuel Macron that European countries must repatriate ISIS detainees who have been transferred from Syria to Iraq as part of a United States operation. In a phone call with the French president, Sudani “stressed the importance for countries around the world, particularly members of the European Union, to take responsibility for receiving individuals who hold their citizenship” to then prosecute them, according to a statement from the Iraqi premier’s office.

The Iraqi judiciary yesterday announced the initiation of proceedings against Islamic State detainees transferred from Syria. In recent days, the US military command for the Middle East (Centcom) announced that the US is engaged in operations to transfer up to seven thousand Islamic State detainees from Syria to Iraq, while the chaos and uncertainties caused between the Syrian army and Kurdish forces threaten the security of ISIS prison camps, with the risk of escapes.
