Mideast: Italian membership of Trump Board of Peace poses ‘constitutional issues’

23 Gennaio 2026

(Adnkronos) – Italy’s entry to US president Donald Trump’s Board of Peace to cement war-ravaged Gaza’s fragile ceasefire poses “constitutional issues”, foreign minister Antonio Tajani told reporters in Rome on Friday on the sidelines of bilateral business forum with Germany.

Trump will chair the board and regional powers including Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Israel, as well as major emerging nations such as Indonesia, have joined. Apart from the US, no other permanent UN Security Council members have agreed to membership of the board, although Trump has said Russia will join.

France has declined to join the board and traditional Western US allies have been cautious. There are fears the board the could undermine the United Nations with Trump envisaging it playing a wider role in future and concerns over Russia’s membership, with no end to the invasion of Ukraine and a peace settlement in sight.
