Osaka, Jan. 22 (Jiji Press)–UA Zensen, which represents workers in a number of industries including textiles and food in Japan, decided Thursday to seek a 6 pct pay increase, including a 4 pct base pay rise, in this year’s “shunto” spring wage talks. It will demand a 7 pct pay increase, or an 85-yen hike on an hourly pay basis, up 5 yen from the previous year, for part-timers, who account for about 60 pct of all workers under UA Zensen. To narrow gaps in pay among companies of different size and according to employment status, unions with lower wage levels will seek an additional 1 percentage point on top of the standard pay hike demand. UA Zensen’s target, decided at a meeting of its central committee in the western Japan city of Osaka, is larger than the “5 pct or more” goal of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation, or Rengo, and is aimed at building momentum for broader wage gains.
