Spain: Italy tracking second deadly rail crash in days

21 Gennaio 2026

(Adnkronos) – Foreign minister Antonio Tajani is “following developments” after a train crash near Barcelona in northeast Spain killed a train driver and injured dozens late Tuesday. Two days earlier, 42 people died in a high-speed train collision and derailment at Adamuz, Andalusia, on Sunday.

“Minister @Antonio_Tajani is following the developments of the second railway accident, which occurred last night in #Catalonia,” the foreign ministry wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Spanish authorities have confirmed that no compatriots are reported to be involved,” the post added.

Italy’s Consulate in Barcelona “has been monitoring the situation from the outset to provide any possible assistance,” the post continued.

In Tuesday’s accident, a commuter train derailed after a containment wall fell on the tracks in Geldida, near Barcelona, due to heavy rain.

A faulty rail joint may have caused the derailment that led to the collision at Adamuz on Sunday, which was Spain’s first-ever fatal accident on the country’s extensive high-speed rail network.
