(Adnkronos) – Foreign minister Antonio Tajani will address celebrations in Anzio and Nettuno on Thursday to mark the 82nd anniversary of the Allied landings on Lazio’s coast – which began on 22 January, 1944 – the foreign ministry said in a statement.
The amphibious Anzio landings (known as Operation Shingle) were a turning point in the campaign for the liberation of Italy from Nazi occupation after the armistice of September 1943.
Tajani will highlight Italy’s contribution to post-war reconstruction, with active engagement in multilateral institutions, European integration and Euro-Atlantic security, according to the statement.
Lazio Regional Council president Antonio Aurigemma, representatives of the Metropolitan City of Rome, mayors and senior local military and law enforcement officials be among participants in the celebrations.
