(Adnkronos) – Italy’s government has approved an accord with the United Arab Emirates to consolidate both countries’ defence capabilities and enhance their understanding of security challenges in the wider Mediterranean region and the Gulf through joint training and military exercises.

At foreign minister Antonio Tajani’s instigation, the cabinet late Tuesday backed a bill for the ratification and implementation of the Italy-UAE defence cooperation agreement which was signed in Rome on 24 February 2025, according to a statement.

“The measure establishes a stable legal framework to consolidate the defence capabilities of both countries, promoting mutual understanding of security challenges in the wider Mediterranean and Gulf region,” read the statement.

“Cooperation will develop through the exchange of visits and delegations, participation in seminars and training courses at military institutions, and the development of joint training activities and exercises,” the statement continued.

Cooperation will also cover industrial collaboration and scientific research in the defence sector, encouraging technology transfer and logistics support between Italy and the UAE’s armed forces, the statement said.

A Joint Committee for Cooperation in the Defence Sector will be established to plan annual activities and monitor progress with joint projects under the agreement, “ensuring that each initiative is carried out in accordance with the principles of sovereignty, reciprocity and Italy’s international commitments,” the statement added.
