(Adnkronos) – The moderate socialist Antonio José Seguro won the first round of the Portuguese presidential elections yesterday, followed by far-right leader André Ventura; the two will face each other in a runoff on February 8.
In the five decades since Portugal freed itself from fascist dictatorship, presidential elections have only once required a runoff, in 1986, highlighting how fragmented the political landscape has become with the rise of the far-right and voter disillusionment with traditional parties.
