(Adnkronos) – Italy takes a long-term view of the “increasingly strategic” Artic and wants to strengthen relations with Arctic countries to boost Euro-Atlantic security, foreign minister Antonio Tajani stated on Friday.
“We want to deepen relations with Arctic countries, contribute to Euro-Atlantic security, strengthen research programmes and promote new economic opportunities for our businesses,” Tajani wrote on X.
“With this strategy, Italy is adopting a systematic and long-term vision,” the post read.
Tajani was among speakers at a conference in Rome on Friday to present the government’s updated strategy document for the Artic in the wake of US president Donald Trump’s vow to take control of Denmark’s semi-autonomous territory of Greenland.
The Arctic is an increasingly strategic region for Italian political, economic and scientific interests, Tajani’s post underlined.
“I have therefore decided to set up an Arctic business roundtable with Italian companies in key sectors such as defence, energy, the environment and space, also with a view to a forthcoming mission to the region,” the post concluded.
