London Mayor: task force and free courses for residents, ‘AI risks becoming a weapon of mass unemployment’

15 Gennaio 2026

(Adnkronos) – An Artificial Intelligence task force and free courses for residents are just two of the measures that London Mayor Sadiq Khan intends to adopt to win the challenge posed by these systems which, in the absence of urgent measures, risk becoming “a weapon of mass job destruction”.

In a public address this evening, anticipated by Sky News, Khan will propose an active role for the City of London in shaping the ongoing revolution, to protect jobs, increase productivity and safeguard the city’s economy, the mayor states, specifying that the Task Force will have the task of “transferring skills at every level of our workforce and providing the next generation with the tools people will need.”

For this reason, the mayor will speak in favor of adopting fast-paced regulation, reforming required skills, and leadership to ensure positive societal outcomes rather than an exacerbation of inequalities.

“Used responsibly, Artificial Intelligence can enable us to transform our public services, turbocharge productivity, and pursue some of our most difficult goals,” he will emphasize. “Used unchecked, Artificial Intelligence can plunge us into an era of mass unemployment.”

We have a “moral, social, and economic” duty to act, to “acquire the potential of AI and use it as a superpower for positive transformations.” The alternative is to “surrender to the challenge and stand by as these systems become weapons of mass job destruction.”

The impact of AI on London’s job market will be nothing short of colossal. The first jobs to disappear will be those of inexperienced personnel and, contrary to the industrial revolution, it will be office jobs that will be most affected by this new revolution, including in finance, among professionals and creatives.
