(Adnkronos) – Fear is growing for Erfan Soltani, the 26-year-old Iranian arrested on January 8 during protests in Fardis, near Tehran, and whose hanging is scheduled for today. His family has been informed of the imminent execution, scheduled for today, and that a last meeting with the young man will be possible, but at the moment there is no contact. This morning, the head of the Iranian Judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, promised ”rapid trials” for people arrested during ”the ongoing riots” in Iran.
“With an extremely rapid trial, within just two days the court issued a death sentence,” a relative of Soltani stated. Erfan Soltani’s sister, who is a lawyer, appealed to the Iranian authorities to handle the case, but the judiciary told her there was no case to handle, the BBC reports.
The Kurdish human rights organization Hengaw stressed that the charges against Soltani have not been explained to his family and fears there are other cases like his, which are not reported due to the internet blockade. US President Donald Trump has promised to intervene against Iran if death penalties are carried out against protesters.
