(Adnkronos) – Italy’s government has “never discussed” sending troops to Greenland “nor has this been requested”, foreign minister Antonio Tajani said on Monday as Europe mulls how to respond US president Donald Trump’s vow to acquire Denmark’s resource-rich, strategic Arctic territory.
“The deployment of Italian troops to Greenland has never been discussed and has never been requested’,” Tajani stated.
“Nuuk and Copenhagen must be free to decide their own destiny,” he said. Greenland is an autonomous territory whose foreign policy and defence are set by the Danish government.
“On Friday, together with (Italy’s higher education and research minister (Anna Maria) Bernini and (defence minister Guido) Crosetto, we will present Italy’s plan for the Arctic, including Greenland,” Tajani added.
