(Adnkronos) – A thousand days have passed since a brutal conflict engulfed Sudan, destroying families, communities, and stealing the future of an entire generation of children. This is stated by Save the Children, the organization that for over 100 years has been fighting to save children at risk and ensure their future.
“The children of Sudan are paying the highest price. They are suffering unimaginable hardships. They are being killed in their homes, in health centers, in schools, in kindergartens, places that should be safe. They are being raped en masse, even if they are only a few months old. They are terrified, hungry, and forced to flee repeatedly, living an endless nightmare. Today, Sudan is facing the world’s largest internal displacement crisis, and children are the most affected. On average, every minute, 8 people have been displaced from their homes. This means 11,000 people every single day. In over 1,000 days, almost 12 million people, including more than five million children, have been displaced, one-fifth of the population, roughly the equivalent of the entire population of Belgium. Behind every statistic, there is a child who has lost their home, education, and often their family,” said Mohamed Abdiladif, Save the Children’s director in Sudan.
“Being displaced in Sudan means living in a squalid camp or a crowded shack, struggling to obtain the most basic necessities, not knowing when the next meal will come or if one can sleep safely through the night. This is not survival. It’s hell. Sometimes we wonder: if the crisis in Sudan had happened ten years ago, would the world have cared more? Has the international community perhaps lost its moral compass, its compassion, its sense of outrage while such atrocities are committed against children, women, and families and on such a scale? The silence is devastating. We can and must act now for Sudan, for the sake of the country’s children and the aid workers who work day after day, often at their own risk. We urge donors to allocate resources to support displaced families and call on the international community to commit to reaching a peace agreement in the country. Sudan must be free from war and allowed to rebuild. The children of Sudan deserve a future,” Abdiladif concluded.
