(Adnkronos) – Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s largest, has announced the cancellation of at least 800 flights due to snow and wind. More than a thousand people spent the night at Schiphol, airport authorities reported, adding that they had set up cots and provided breakfast for travelers forced to sleep at the airport. Approximately 1,100 flights were scheduled for today at Schiphol, and the number of cancellations is expected to increase throughout the day.
Rail traffic is also severely disrupted in the Netherlands. The Dutch national railway company NS advises travelers to postpone non-essential journeys. Around 9 this morning, over 700 kilometers of traffic jams occurred on Dutch roads, the worst Wednesday morning since February 10, 1999.
