Australia: Lener appointed Italy’s new ambassador

7 Gennaio 2026

(Adnkronos) – Career diplomat Nicola Lener is Italy’s new envoy to Australia, the foreign ministry wrote Wednesday on X, congratulating Lener on his posting.

“Congratulations to Nicola Lener, new Ambassador of Italy to Australia,” read the post, which contained emojis of Italy and Australia’s flags and a handshake.

“Geographically distant but close to our country due to the history of the large number of Italians who contributed to shaping its identity, Australia is an increasingly important partner for Italy in the Indo-Pacific region,” Lener wrote in a message below.

“I am committed to further developing relations between our governments and peoples,” the message added.

After postings to Peru, Jordan, Morocco and Canada, Lener served as Italy’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates from 2019-2022. Prior to his appointment as ambassador to Australia, Lener coordinated juridical and multilateral diplomatic activities for the foreign ministry in Rome aimed at fighting graft and organised crime.
