Ukraine, Zelensky asks Trump for US troops for peace

(Adnkronos) –
The first documents for the peace plan will be ready in January. Meanwhile, Ukraine hopes that Donald Trump will agree to send American soldiers to secure the end of the war with Russia. Volodymyr Zelensky reiterates that he is ready to meet Vladimir Putin and takes stock of the crucial phase of negotiations, between dialogue with the President of the United States and accusations from Moscow, which attributes responsibility to Kyiv for an alleged drone attack on the Russian president’s residence.

“Our delegation contacted the American one and we discussed the details. The attack is a hoax. And our partners can always, thanks to technical possibilities, verify that it was a hoax,” Zelensky says, trying to close the case to focus on real priorities.

“There are documents that will certainly be ready for signing in January. This depends on the parties’ capabilities and willingness to sign them,” says Zelensky, who will meet the leaders of the Coalition of the Willing at the beginning of January. The recent meeting with Trump in Mar-a-Lago allowed 90% of the plan to be defined. Issues related to Donbass, Russia’s objective, and security guarantees requested from the United States remain to be resolved. Kyiv would like a formal American commitment for 50 years.

“The priority among security guarantees for us is that, simultaneously with the ceasefire, there is a monitoring mission to verify that there are no provocations or incidents. The monitoring mission will be led by our partners, whom we trust. These are countries that have the technical resources to do so: satellites, infrastructure, drones.” “The second part of the security guarantees is described point by point and refers to the partners’ reaction in case of a ceasefire violation,” the president observes.

In Florida, Zelensky spoke with Trump about the possible deployment of American troops in Ukraine, along the demarcation line of a possible demilitarized zone or at the border. “To be honest, this can only be confirmed by the President of the United States of America. These are US troops, and therefore America makes these decisions. Of course, we are discussing this with both President Trump and representatives of the Coalition of the Willing,” says the president. “It would be a strong signal in terms of security guarantees.” Meanwhile, Washington is willing to help Ukraine by providing air defense systems, particularly with NASAMS and PAC-3 missiles.

An equally strong signal, Zelensky states, would be Trump’s presence in Ukraine. In Mar-a-Lago, the invitation to the American president was extended informally. Trump opened up to the possibility of a trip to foster dialogue, hoping for a solution regardless of his presence in Kyiv. “It would be good if Trump flew directly to Ukraine without stopping in Poland,” says Zelensky, referring to the current procedure that requires leaders to reach Kyiv by train. “This would allow us to count on a truce.”

Will the conflict’s solution also involve a direct confrontation with Putin? “We believe that in January there will be an opportunity for a joint meeting of the leaders of Europe, the United States, and Ukraine. And we have raised the issue of a meeting with the Russians. I told Trump and the European leaders and I confirm it once again now: ‘I am ready for any format of meeting with Putin. I am not afraid of any format of our meeting. The main thing is that the Russians are not afraid’,” Zelensky’s words.
