Tokyo, Dec. 30 (Jiji Press)–Former Japanese Communist Party leader Tetsuzo Fuwa died of acute cardiac failure at a Tokyo hospital on Tuesday. He was 95. Known as one of the party’s “theoretical pillars,” Fuwa established a “realistic and flexible” approach for the party. A Tokyo native whose real name was Kenjiro Ueda, Fuwa joined the party in 1947, before graduating from the University of Tokyo in 1953. He was first elected to the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of the Diet, in 1969. He has since served 11 terms as a Lower House member. He became chairman of the party’s executive committee in 1982. Later, he served as chairman of the party’s central committee from November 2000 to January 2006. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
