(The second sentence in the final paragraph should have read, “…full-scale…,” instead of as sent. A substitute story follows.) Japan to Adopt Record 122.3-T.-Yen FY 2026 Budget Tokyo, Dec. 24 (Jiji Press)–The Japanese government is in the final stages of work to set the size of its fiscal 2026 general-account budget at around 122.3 trillion yen, informed sources said Wednesday. The figure, larger than the fiscal 2025 initial budget worth 115,197.8 billion yen, would hit a record high for two years in a row. Tax revenue in the year starting next April is expected to reach a record 83.7 trillion yen. With the higher tax revenue seen unable to cover expenditures, however, the issue amount of Japanese government bonds, excluding refinancing bonds, is expected to increase to some 29.6 trillion yen from 28,647.1 billion yen under the fiscal 2025 initial budget, the sources said. The government is slated to adopt the fiscal 2026 draft budget at a cabinet meeting Friday. It will be the first full-scale budget under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s administration, launched in October. END [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.]
