UK, poll, 50% convinced Starmer will leave Downing Street by 2026

23 Dicembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Half of British voters believe Keir Starmer will be replaced as prime minister by the end of 2026. This emerges from a YouGov poll for Sky News, which indicates a climate of growing unease even among Labour ranks, fueled by a drop in polls and the fear of a negative result in the local elections in May.

According to the survey, 31% of respondents think Starmer “probably” will no longer be in Downing Street within a year, while 19% believe he “surely” will be replaced. Only 35% of those questioned believe he still has a chance to remain at the head of the government. Among the possible challengers cited are Health Minister Wes Streeting, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood.

The poll also provides a very severe assessment of the government’s economic performance: 71% of respondents state that the economy has worsened in the last 12 months, compared to just 7% who speak of an improvement. As for personal finances, only 15% expect an improvement in the situation next year, 40% expect a worsening, and 39% believe it will remain substantially unchanged.

The survey was conducted on a sample of 2,041 people between December 21 and 22. A month ago, 56% of respondents stated they expected their financial situation to worsen, and 75% judged the government’s economic management negatively.
