(Adnkronos) – Russia has sent weapons and military personnel to Madagascar, in support of Michael Randrianirinaha’s military junta, which seized power last October following a coup, denounced the President of the National Assembly, Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, former opposition leader. A Russian military plane landed on Saturday at Ivato airport near the capital of Antananarivo, leaving 43 crates of weapons, including assault rifles and anti-tank missile systems, and 40 soldiers. The weapons were delivered to the Presidential Guard of Madagascar based on a “legitimate cooperation agreement,” as explained by Randrianasoloniaiko. Randrianirina, commander of the elite Capsat forces, took power after protests and the flight to France of former President Andry Rajoelina. A Moscow delegation then held talks with junta representatives. “The objective of the visit was to strengthen the capacity of the local armed forces. The Russian delegation clearly expressed its intention to support Madagascar, particularly for the training and development of the forces,” added the Parliament speaker.
