(Adnkronos) – The Israeli government has approved the closure of the Army radio station, Galei Tsahal, ignoring the objections of the attorney general, who stated that the move would threaten media freedom. Founded in 1950, Galei Tsahal is – according to a recent survey – the third most listened-to station in Israel, with a 17.7% share.
“The government unanimously approved the proposal put forward by Defense Minister Israel Katz to close the Army radio station,” the minister’s office stated, specifying that the measure will come into effect on March 1, 2026. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had urged ministers to support Katz’s proposal.
Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara, who also serves as the government’s legal advisor, stated that the decision “raises concerns about possible interference with freedom of expression and the press.” “The government’s decision does not meet the necessary legal requirements and cannot be advanced in its current form,” reads a 34-page document drafted by her office.
Some programs broadcast by the station were critical of the government. Katz justified the decision by arguing that Galei Tsahal “broadcasts political and divisive content that is not in line with the values” of the IDF.
“In the last two years, during the war, many soldiers and citizens, including affected families, have repeatedly complained that the station does not represent them and even undermines the war effort and morale,” Katz said. “A situation where a radio intended for all citizens of the State of Israel is run by the army is an anomaly that does not exist in democratic countries.”
