(Adnkronos) – Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese today announced a broad firearm buyback program following the attack on Bondi Beach in Sydney. Referring to the six weapons legally held by Sajid Akram – the attacker who died during the attack – Anthony Albanese stressed that “there is no reason why a person living in the suburbs of Sydney should own so many firearms.” Authorities promise to compensate those who return “superfluous, recently banned, and illegal” weapons.
Meanwhile, tributes to the memory of the victims of the country’s bloodiest massacre in decades are multiplying: hundreds of surfers and swimmers gathered to form a giant circle in the sea, on the eve of the national day of mourning and remembrance to be observed on Sunday, one week after the attack.
“This day will be an opportunity to be with the Jewish community, to embrace it and share the pain of all Australians,” Albanese declared, announcing that his country will pay tribute to the 15 victims on Sunday, December 21, and inviting people to light candles at 6:47 PM, exactly one week after the assault began. It will be “a moment to pause, reflect, and affirm that hatred and violence will never define who we are as Australians,” Albanese said.
