USA, Dem report accuses Trump on clemency acts, ‘85% of pardoned are white’

16 Dicembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – 85% of people who received a federal pardon or clemency in the United States in 2025 are white, while those indicted for the January 6, 2021 Capitol assault represent 90% of beneficiaries. This is what emerges from a report by the office of Democratic Representative Ayanna Pressley (Massachusetts), which accuses President Donald Trump of an “unbalanced” use of pardon powers. According to the document, only 5% of beneficiaries are Latino and 8% African American, compared to a federal prison population composed of 25% whites, 36% Hispanics, and 34% blacks.

“Donald Trump’s use of clemency has overlooked many of the most marginalized and affected communities,” says Pressley’s office, quoted by NBC News. The report, titled Trump’s Clemency Gap, examines all federal clemency measures adopted between January 20 and December 5, based on official data from the White House, the Department of Justice, and other public sources. In total, over 1,700 people received pardons or commutations, of which about 1,500 were related to the events of January 6, 2021. Only nine measures concerned inmates convicted of drug offenses, despite over 60,000 people being incarcerated in the United States for this type of crime.
