(Adnkronos) – The M23 rebel group, supported by Rwanda, announced in recent hours that it will withdraw its forces from Uvira, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. But it also set conditions. Radio France Internationale reports this. On Wednesday, the M23 had claimed control of the city, not far from the border with Burundi.
“The Afc/M23 will unilaterally withdraw its forces from the city of Uvira, as requested by the United States,” states a press release reported by Rfi. The group presents the decision as a “measure” to strengthen “trust in support of the Doha process,” but demands “the demilitarization of the city of Uvira,” as well as “protection for the population” and “monitoring of the ceasefire through the deployment of a neutral force.”
