(Adnkronos) – Nineteen years old, university student, Polish, “fascinated by Islam and terrorism”. This is the description provided by the Polish authorities of the boy they reported arresting on suspicion of contacts with the self-proclaimed Islamic State and of preparing an attack against a Christmas market. An “attack” thwarted while the plan, authorities said, was still in the “preliminary phase”.
A young man suspected of preparing a bomb attack against a gathering, particularly against a Christmas market, has been arrested – authorities announced – on charges of “preparing a terrorist attack”. In pre-trial detention for 30 days, he faces life imprisonment.
According to Jacek Dobrzynski, spokesman for the coordinator of Polish special services, the suspect is a first-year law student at the Catholic University of Lublin, “fascinated by Islam and terrorism”. The Prosecutor’s Office confirms that the plans were thwarted “in the preliminary phase” and reports the boy’s contacts with “representatives of the Islamic State”. The young man, identified only as Mateusz W., wanted to “support the activities” of the self-proclaimed Islamic State, they accuse.
