(Adnkronos) – The European Union has activated an emergency air bridge, with a total of eight flights, to deliver humanitarian aid to Darfur. The European Commission announced this in a statement, emphasizing that the Sudanese region is affected by mass atrocities, famine, and displacement linked to the ongoing war. The first flight, which took place last Friday, delivered approximately 100 tons of aid from EU humanitarian stocks and partner organizations: the others are scheduled by the end of January 2026.
The EU executive recalls the “drastic worsening” of the humanitarian situation in Darfur, which remains “one of the most difficult places in the world for humanitarian organizations to reach,” after the fall of the regional capital El Fasher to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) at the end of October, an event that “marked a severe escalation of an already catastrophic humanitarian situation and further limited access to aid”: civilians who managed to flee report widespread violations of international humanitarian law.
The EU air bridge is transporting supplies including shelter materials, water, hygiene items, and medical supplies. The total value of this operation is 3.5 million euros, funded by the EU humanitarian aid budget, in addition to over 270 million euros in humanitarian aid channeled by the Twenty-Seven in 2025 alone, which made the EU one of the largest contributors to the response and marked the largest EU humanitarian effort in Africa.
