Australia: Must not lower our guard against anti-Semitism, racial hatred, terrorism – Italy

15 Dicembre 2025

(Adnkronos) – Nations must remain vigilant on anti-Semitism, racial hatred and terrorism, which are reminders of the need for peace and dialogue, foreign minister Antonio said after Sunday’s attack on Jewish people at Sydney’s Bondi beach on Sunday, which killed at least 16 and wounded dozens.

“Yesterday’s terrible terrorist attack against Sydney’s Jewish community reminds us of the urgency and necessity of this commitment to peace and dialogue,” Tajani said in an opening speech at the 18th Conference of Italian Ambassadors.

“Our vigilance and mobilisation against anti-Semitism and racial hatred must continue at its highest level. My thoughts are with all those affected, their loved ones, and the Jewish communities,” he added.

In an interview with Il Messaggero and Il Mattino dailies earlier on Monday, Tajani cautioned however against “excessive alarmism” which he said played into the hands of terrorists.

“We need lucidity and firmness to protect ourselves,” Tajani said.

The alleged gunmen who shot at Jewish people attending a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi were a 50-year who was shot dead at the scene and his 24-year-old Australian-born son, who was hospitalised for his injuries. Media reports named the pair as Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram, respectively.
