(Adnkronos) – The Australian government has decided to reform gun law after the Bondi Beach massacre, on the outskirts of Sydney, after at least 15 people were killed by two men, father and son, who shot at people gathered to celebrate Hanukkah. During a government meeting, chaired by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, it was ”agreed that strong, decisive and targeted intervention on gun law reform was necessary as immediate action, including renegotiating the National Firearms Agreement, established after the 1996 Port Arthur tragedy, to ensure it remains as robust as possible in the current evolving security context”. A note released at the end of the meeting stated that ”the prime ministers have agreed to strengthen gun laws across the country”, police and attorneys general are called upon to develop options.
On the table is the establishment of the National Firearms Register and the role of criminal intelligence in evaluating firearm licenses. It is also intended to limit the number of firearms an individual can possess, indefinite firearm licenses, and types of legal weapons. Furthermore, a condition for obtaining a firearm license will be Australian citizenship.
As an immediate priority, the Australian government will begin working on possible further customs restrictions on the import of firearms and other types of weapons, including 3D printing, new technologies, and firearm equipment that can hold large quantities of ammunition.
