(Adnkronos) – European nations wants an end to the devastating war in Ukraine that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022, but they “must be part of” any peace settlement, Italy said on Friday.
“We want to work for peace in Ukraine, but we must be part of the agreement, foreign minister Antonio Tajani told a European People’s Party meeting in Heidelberg, Germany
“This also because without our decision on sanctions (against Russia), it is impossible to achieve this,” Tajani continued.
Tajani underlined a need for clarity with the United States – Europe’s transatlantic ally.
Europe the US must both “play leading roles” in the negotiations to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Tajani argued.
“We must be very clear with the Americans…I believe in transatlantic unity. Europe and America are friends; they are two sides of the same coin,” said Tajani.
